Yet when we talk about modernising agriculture, the conversation often jumps immediately to tractors, drones, sensors, satellites, robotics and other sophisticated infrastructure.
Those technologies matter. They will matter even more in the years ahead.
But there is another piece of infrastructure that is already sitting in the hands of millions of people.
The smartphone.
And we think it may be one of the most underestimated tools in the future of African agriculture.
The farm is already producing information
Every farm is constantly generating information.
A crop changes colour.
Leaves begin to curl.
Rain arrives earlier than expected.
A pest appears.
The soil behaves differently.
A farmer notices that one part of a field is performing differently from another.
A planting date is recorded.
An input is purchased.
A harvest is made.
A decision works—or it doesn't.
For a farmer, these aren't abstract data points. They are observations that influence what happens next.
Historically, much of this information has remained either in the farmer's head, in notebooks, or simply disappeared after a decision was made.
The smartphone creates an opportunity to change that.

Consider one of the most ordinary situations on a farm.
A farmer notices something unusual on a plant.
They don't necessarily know the scientific name of the problem. They may not know whether it is a disease, pest, environmental stress or something else.
But they can take a picture.
That photograph becomes a starting point.
Instead of requiring the farmer to translate what they are seeing into technical language before receiving help, technology can begin with the evidence the farmer already has.
This is one of the ideas behind Krawp.

The objective isn't to make the farmer dependent on a machine.

It would be easy to look at a product like Krawp and think the opportunity is simply identifying diseases from photographs.
We think that would be missing the bigger picture.
If a farmer discovers a potential crop problem, identification is only the beginning.
They may want to understand why it happened.
They may want to know what they should monitor.
They may need to record the event.
They may need to check the weather.
They may need an agricultural input.
They may need to find a retailer.
They may need to arrange delivery.
Eventually, they may want to monitor whether the problem is getting better.
The smartphone can potentially sit at the centre of this entire sequence.
Understand. Decide. Act. Monitor.
That is the direction we're building toward.
The farmer's pocket is also a marketplace
One of the most interesting consequences of putting agricultural intelligence on a phone is what happens after the decision.
Suppose a farmer identifies a problem and determines that they need a particular input or material.
Today, the next step may involve travelling to a local retailer, asking around, calling someone, or relying on whatever is available nearby.
We want to make that process much more connected.
Krawp's planned marketplace will allow farmers to discover useful agricultural materials, connect with local and nearby retailers, and eventually have products delivered directly to them.
This creates an important connection between information and commerce.
A farmer doesn't just need to know what to do.
They need to be able to do it.
And the businesses serving farmers also benefit.
A local retailer gets access to customers they may not otherwise reach digitally.
A farmer gets more convenient access to products.
The platform facilitates the connection.
That is the kind of relationship we want technology to create: more access and more opportunity on both sides.
What happens when the phone starts watching the farm?
The smartphone is only the first layer.
The next opportunity is to connect it with the farm itself.
Cameras and connected devices can eventually provide information continuously rather than only when a farmer manually captures it.
Imagine being able to monitor sections of a farm remotely and identify changes over time.
That could mean spotting potential problems earlier, understanding patterns that are difficult to notice through occasional visits, and giving farmers another layer of visibility over their fields.
This is part of our longer-term thinking around Krawp.
First, the farmer uses the phone to understand the farm.
Then technology can begin helping the farmer monitor the farm.
Eventually, if those systems become sufficiently reliable, intelligence can begin connecting with machines that perform specific tasks.
That is where robotics enters our longer-term roadmap.
We aren't claiming that a smartphone alone will transform agriculture.
We're saying something more practical:
The smartphone can become the interface through which a much larger agricultural technology system begins.
Africa doesn't need technology for technology's sake
There is a temptation in technology to build impressive things simply because they are technically possible.
Agriculture requires a different mindset.
A farmer doesn't care that a system uses sophisticated technology if the answer isn't useful.
They don't care how impressive the infrastructure is if it doesn't work in their environment.
They don't care about a beautiful dashboard if it doesn't help them make a decision.
This is especially important in Africa, where agricultural systems are diverse and the conditions surrounding farmers can vary dramatically.
Different crops.
Different climates.
Different languages.
Different levels of connectivity.
Different farming practices.
Different markets.
Technology has to meet that reality.
That is why our focus is not simply on putting more technology onto farms.
It is on making technology useful to the people already working on them.
The next agricultural revolution may be less visible than the last one
When people imagine agricultural transformation, they often picture machines.
A tractor replacing manual labour.
A drone flying over a field.
A robot moving between rows.
Those things make for impressive photographs.
But some of the most important changes may happen much more quietly.
A farmer taking a photograph before deciding what to do.

A cooperative using digital tools to support its members.
A retailer reaching farmers through a marketplace.
A farmer keeping reliable records for the first time.
A field being monitored remotely.
A farmer receiving information early enough to make a different decision.
None of these necessarily looks revolutionary in isolation.
Together, they can change how decisions are made.
And that is where we think the smartphone becomes so interesting.
It is already familiar.
It already travels with the farmer.
It already has a camera.
It already connects to the internet.
It doesn't require us to build an entirely new physical interface for every farmer.
The infrastructure is already there.
The challenge is building something worthy of it.

We started Krawp with a simple observation: farmers should not have to be physically close to an expert, retailer or institution to begin accessing useful agricultural technology.
The phone in their pocket can become a bridge.
A bridge to information.
A bridge to agricultural intelligence.
A bridge to markets.

A bridge to farm monitoring.
And, eventually, a bridge between digital intelligence and physical automation.
We are starting with crop intelligence because it solves an immediate and tangible problem.
But our ambition is much larger.
We want Krawp to become a technology layer connecting the farmer to the information, tools, businesses and infrastructure surrounding modern agriculture.
The smartphone won't replace the farmer.
It won't replace decades of experience.
It won't replace the people working in agricultural communities.
It can do something different.
It can put more capability in the farmer's hands.
